An excerpt from "Spiritual Nutrition: How the Foods You Eat Affect Your Mind, Body and Spirit
"BY CYNDI DALE:
"Food, Mood, And Mind...
The following list of connections between food, emotions, and beliefs can be used as a stand-alone reference or in concert with the Intuitive Eating awareness process and journaling worksheet.
Cravings are important memos from the body and are its way of telling us about our emotional needs. They can also provide clues as to the limiting beliefs or negative self-talk that might be contributing to an emotional upset, whether that disruption is a minor, temporary state or a chronic, debilitating pattern. Cravings are tools and guides in the discipline of spiritual nutrition.
The food and feelings connections outlined here can shed some light on the interplay between certain thoughts, feelings, and emotions that may be seeking your attention. Following are examples that we can all relate to."

Another perspective from Rabbi Simmon Jacobson's article "Soul Workout: How to Get Yourself to Work Out"
:
"Are you lacking the “motivation” to work out? Have personal trainers, buying exercise class cards, paying for a monthly gym membership, and posting motivational quotes on your refrigerator not worked? Are you feeling guilty? Fear not! Perhaps a spiritual approach to working out can get you going. Deeper motivation and insight into the spiritual value of fitness can elevate your experience of working out, which will help you develop a positive relationship with it.
Your Body is Valuable — And Not Entirely Yours
You were created by a power greater than yourself. Your body is not yours; it is divine “property” entrusted to your care and responsibility. Your body is therefore sacred. Thus, working out and keeping your body healthy is not just good for you; it is a critical component in your obligation of protecting and maintaining the treasured gift you were entrusted with: your body. Just as you are charged with protecting and preserving your environment and definitely not harming it, you must also not take your own body for granted. It is your cosmic responsibility to treat your body with respect in every way, which includes getting regular exercise (among many other things).
Working Out Helps You to Live a Meaningful Life
When you are healthy, you can concentrate on the things that are important to you. Most significantly, a sound body allows you to focus on your soul, enabling you to fulfill your divine mission in the world and live a meaningful life. Just as the body needs exercise, sleep, proper nutrition, and occasional vitamins or medicine, the soul needs nourishment. This nourishment includes an awareness and connection to a transcendent power, and a unique purpose in life. It’s important that your physical fitness have a spiritual component — an appreciation of the higher purpose of maintaining good health."

An excerpt from the article titled: “WE’RE #1 – A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE ON LEADING THE WAY IN FATNESS AND FITNESS”
October/November 2010
By Dr. Stephen Willis
"'A few years ago I was on a tour in Israel and we were standing beside the Sea of Galilee. Just yards from the shore, I noticed a large round stone sitting atop a perch of rocks. The stone looked to be at least 75-100 pounds. When I asked the guide why they had the stone in such a prominent location he informed us that it was an old millstone used for crushing corn and wheat seed. He then referred to the Scripture where Jesus said, “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck.'
I think Jesus made his point clearly. Don’t hurt children. Their guardian angels always have the attention of God in heaven. The society, the church, the family, and the school system that hurts children will have a mighty price to pay. We need to make children and their health a #1 priority.
Without question, the roads of faith and fitness must intersect here. I believe a verse in the Bible like, “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat” is literal instruction to us. Our faith demands that we protect children and others by giving them the proper nutrition they need. Our faith demands that we give them the educational and exercise opportunities that are necessary to prepare them for a healthy physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual life.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
1. START AT HOME - You wouldn’t be reading this article if you weren’t already concerned about your overall health. Yet, it is amazing to me how many people at my local gym take care of their own body, but have seriously overweight children. It makes me wonder, “Where’s the disconnect?” If anything, the foods we give our children should be healthier than what we ourselves are eating – never less healthy.
2. KEEP THE CHURCH IN CHECK- We recently had a large-scale children’s event and all we had was caffeinated soda for drinks. What were we thinking? Well, clearly we weren’t thinking. It was a school night, no less. In my experience, churches can be the worst for loading kids up on sugar drinks and candy and subsequently wondering why they have so many discipline problems during the Bible lesson. Have a talk with your pastor about the overall plan for children’s snacks and the foods served during youth group activities. (Then don’t be surprised when the kids actually listen to you during the teaching time).”

By Dr. Abdul-Wahab Khan and Dr. M. Nazir Khan
"In today’s busy and hectic world, many of us are faced with constant hurdles in our journey towards maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. Many of us are confused on the subject of health and fitness, and have passed the years listening to conflicting advice and opinions. As a result, we are unsure of where to start, how to stay motivated, and why we aren’t reaching our goals. In this short piece, we will cover the benefits of exercise from an Islamic and physiologic perspective, ways to stay motivated, plan towards achieving realistic goals, and plan an exercise program that you can follow.
Fitness has become one of the hottest topics in society. Whether you’re seeing a commercial about a new exercise app or gadget, or listening to a friend talk about their new work-out routine, it seems everywhere you turn there is talk about getting into shape. But why be fit? Making lifestyle changes can be hard and require a lot of effort. If we’re going to succeed in making lifestyle changes, we need to make sure we are doing it for the right reasons.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said “Actions depend on one’s intentions. A person will only achieve what they intended” (Sahih Bukhari). Starting out with the right intention is absolutely key to the lifelong journey of health and fitness. Without recognizing the Islamic and physiological benefits of exercise, you are far less likely to value your health and be firm in your commitment."
