For what so ever reason you decided to start growing your own food, thank you! Knowingly or not, you are doing your part to change the world. Its no question of if traditional agricultural practices will unrecoverably harm the environment but WHEN!
In the natural progression of agriculture many changes have taken place to enhance the quality, yield, and profit margin of crops. And we have discovered the damaging consequences of these practices. Yet we continue to still do the same wrong. Is it insanity or negligence by big corporations? The truth is, its both!
We can no longer afford to turn a blind eye to such destructive actions to our environment and it becomes more obvious every day. Cancer rates rising, Poor air quality, Rivers and Lakes closed because its not safe to swim in the water. The industrial chemicals used in commercial agriculture are clearly labeled hazardous, "do not come into contact is skin, eyes, mouth, will cause cancer, birth defects, etc" but still they're sprayed on the food we grow, leaching into rivers and the ground water we drink. I could write pages on the impact of traditional agriculture, but its already been done. This isn't something new, google it..
Have you heard of Hydroponics? Seen any of the latest equipment? Nasa, Standford, and many other institutions are researching and implementing this modern farming technique and discovering the advantages of this low-impact method of farming. The simplicity of it all, makes it possible to grow your own produce year round. You get more harvests, better yields, increased nutritional values, magazine quality produce, in less time and with less space with the set ups I will be talking about in my next posts. And the return on your investment in the equipment includes saving the environment, eating healthier foods, better tasting meals, and saving money freeing you from rising costs at the grocery store!
What most people haven't figured out yet is the cost of commercial agriculture is far greater than currency. In the time it took for the forest to grow that was cut down for farm land, or the soil to become rich with nutrients, and the rivers to shape the ecosystems life thrives off of the world has seen 14 different forms of currency. Many use population increases for the rationalization of our actions, and it only accelerates the infertility that our world is heading towards. Increasing the problem is not the answer, change is our only salvation. The change is up to us..
