Healthy Communication skills can help create healthy personal, business and political relationships.
Tip #1: Listening. Training yourself to use healthy communication skills starts with listening. One of the most important healthy communication skills is listening. Many people are focused on making their point or winning an argument, rather than listening to another person’s point of view. When the person you are speaking to can tell that you are really listening to them, they automatically become less defensive. This is because the act of really listening is an act of kindness and it shows that you respect others, even if you may not agree with them. Good listening skills also help you to better understand the information that other people are trying to convey. Additionally, practicing good listening can improve your relationships with others as well as your problem solving skills. An important part of listening is to “empathically” listen, which means to seek to understand fully what another person is feeling. This involves “putting yourself in their shoes” and can be difficult at first, especially when you feel that another person has injured you. Practice this skill whenever you can until you become an expert at understanding others.
