I live in a suburban neighborhood near a creek so we occasionally have rats in the neighborhood. I have never seen them and from what the city says they are basically living in the yard behind my neighbor's yard. I REALLY want a garden! My question is do garden attract rodents? How can I prevent rats and/or mice from invading my yard? I know if I plant a garden my neighbors are going to have a fit so I need good information to be sure I am not causing more rat problems.

I have a 12x12 garden and I have never seen rats in it. I have seen rats eating my palm dates and oranges on the ground. (I live in florida). If you have a pet, their leavings could be enough to keep rats and mice away. My dog kills about 2 a year. If you do not have a pet, you can purchase crystlized urine from a preditor like a bobcat or wolf. If messing with secreations isn't your thing, you can purchase a fake owl or hawk that usually keeps them at bay pretty well.

There are rats in my neighborhood. My cat occasionally leaves a "gift" on the porch so I can't miss them. I have not seen damage to my plants that I could attribute to a rat. Either the cat keeps them away or they just aren't interested in tomatoes.

We had a mouse two years back that was consuming vegetables in the aquaponics system. I put plastic cups over all the vegetables at night and these effectively kept him out until we managed to trap him. Now, there are feral cats around and I think we have less mice and rats.
